What should I do if I think my child has dyslexia?You may wish to consult with your child's teacher and the person in charge of student support at their school, who may have a title such as Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo), Inclusion Leader or Learning Enhancement Coordinator to further understand the support that can be offered to your child in their school. You can also seek an assessment and/or specialist tutoring.

How common is Dyslexia?It is believed that approximately 10% of the population are dyslexic, though not all are diagnosed. It can affect anyone regardless of their gender, language or background.

How old does a child need to be to get an assessment?A child can typically be assessed for dyslexia around the age around 7 years old. Some signs of dyslexia can be observed in early years, but a formal diagnosis is usually made once the child has had some exposure to reading instruction. Early assessment and intervention are crucial for providing the necessary support to help children succeed.

Does the Dyslexia Association of Hong Kong conduct assessments?No, we do not offer assessment services as an organisation. Specialist teachers who have an Assessment Practice Certificate, Educational Psychologists and Clinical Psychologists can assess and diagnose Dyslexia. There are a range of private clinics and centres in Hong Kong who provide assessments. There are also public services available through the Department of Health Child Assessment Centres.
